Every piece of media, be it movies or videogames or books have some kind of a message attached to them. A theme that they revolve around. The Lord of the Rings would never have worked without its thorough exploration of different forms of duality between good and evil or unity and division. I know it’s very black and white in its execution, but if not for that, most of the fantasy fiction (and even fiction in general) today would’ve been very different. Frodo is one of the most iconic characters in the history of fiction. And then fantasy would remain very uninspired until the 60s when Michael Moorcock finally wrote the superb The Dreaming City which added a whole new edge to fantasy genre, exploring the themes of law and chaos unlike the pre-established notion of good vs evil. Elric remains one of the edgiest yet one of the most influential works in fantasy genre. This law and chaos theme was explored further by other dark fantasy writers including George R. R. Martin in his awful A Song of Ice and Fire series while keeping morally grey characters. My point is that every piece of fiction, no matter how bad or good revolves around one theme or another and it leaves adds something to the witch’s brew that is fiction. Anime is one such art. And its main theme is “2 weren’t enough”.
